Timing gear cover and cam getting pulled

One last shot of the short block, before removing the water pump and front end of the engine. It's amazing how much space there is in the engine compartment with the heads removed. :)

Unfortunately, I got wrench-happy and didn't take any pictures through the process of removing the timing gear cover, but it's a very straightforward process once the harmonic balancer is removed. This picture was taken after the camshaft was removed. You can see the old oil deposits even more clearly than in the engine valley. As with the valley, I will be thoroughly cleaning this out.

A close-up of the timing probe mount on the timing gear cover. I apologize for the low quality; this is what I get for using a disposable camera. There are supposed to be two cylinders coming out of the top of the bracket for the timing probe (used to set injection timing) to install. The taller of the two (on the right side) was broken off at some point before I got the truck. In addition to removing the camshaft to inspect the lobes (after suspecting a bad hydraulic lifter), this is the reason I removed the timing gear cover. I have a second cover that's intact that I removed from a ruined engine (thanks again Calvin) that has been cleaned and will be painted, that I will be installing.
